Recovery Street Plan
In an effort to invigorate economic recovery downtown in response to COVID-19, and following public input and council direction, the City of Aspen invites businesses to apply for extended commercial activity in the public right-of-way.
City of Aspen staff is dedicated to working closely with businesses as we take steps to configure streets and arrange program details to increase the space available to businesses to operate while adhering to the Pitkin County health order. We will all need to be flexible and adaptable, as we continually evaluate the program and make adjustments.
If you are interested in extending your commercial operations into the public right-of-way, please contact Mitch Osur via phone or email at 970-987-7081 or firstname.lastname@example.org for a special permit application.
To enable quick and safe implementation, the City of Aspen will provide white jersey barriers and other simple measures to create space for outdoor activation. Staff will continue to work with businesses on measures that can be implemented by the business within the activation areas, with safety continuing to be the top priority.
Streets may be modified or closed to traffic, depending on business participation and street geography. Businesses are able to participate by extending operations into designated outdoor areas in front of their existing storefronts. There is no deadline to submit an application, but interested businesses are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible. This program is scheduled to conclude October 9.
The City of Aspen asked for input on expanding restaurant and storefront activity into the streets in order to increase the number of customers served within health order guidelines and to create more diversity downtown for businesses, residents, and visitors. A community survey found that 93% of the 730 participants support outdoor commerce as an option for COVID-19 response and recovery.
