Form of Governance & Duties

The City of Aspen operates under a City Manager form of government. The City Manager is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the City Council. It is the responsibility of the City Manager's Office to ensure the public receives excellent customer service by providing guidance and support to all City departments, and by assisting City Council in defining and meeting their collective goals.

The City of Aspen currently is operating under Interim City Manager, Sara Ott. The search is underway for a permanent City Manager.

The Interim City Manager directly oversees Parks and Open Space and Recreation,  Finance, Police, Human Resources, Community Development, Public Works, and Housing.

Public Works Director Scott Miller oversees Asset, Engineering, Housing Development, and Assistant Public Works Director.

Updates on Recruitment for a New City Manager

As of July 9, 2019 the application process is now closed for a new City Manager. Over the next few weeks our recruiter will be going through the 64 applications received and selecting candidates to proceed to the next round of the process, which will include preliminary interviews and answering detailed written questions.
